"French troubadour Arno Sojo makes an impression on album two… With its knowingly retro drum machines and inventive guitar-centric instrumentation, this atmospheric follow-up feels like a change of gear. The lush strings may be gone, but the song is still all on "Sustain The Illusion". There’s a hint of Mansun to brooding opener "Breaking The Bond" and building ballad "The Gift", and in parts Sojo’s earnest vocals draw on David Sylvian (the languid "Someday", "Stars Align"). Comparisons come and go (Depeche Mode, Placebo...) and while there’s nothing truly prog here, Sojo does have the knack of imbuing conventional songs with imaginative twists : the compelling melodic ideas of the motorik "Twinkle", "Clean Slate" ’s enigmatic earworm refrain, the guitar textures of "Guilt Trip" and that bass groove on "Burn Your Icons"... The troubadour’s open-hearted performance and craftsmanship make this a work of real substance."

"A musical marvel that can be revelled in time and again. Sojo is a phenomenally talented musician... A series of songs as delicate and finely crafted as porcelain but as firm and grounded as an oak tree. He has created a rich and commanding sound, crackling with energy and power that sends shivers down your spine and demands attention... Working naturally alongside his stunning compositions is the unique depth and range of Sojo’s vocals, hitting highs and lows that others might only dream of, all the while lulling and soothing you... His lyrics are tender, evocative and easily identifiable... "Sustain The Illusion" is a masterfully created album from a musician with a broad range and scope who brings music to life in an unorthodox and almost revolutionary manner. He blurs the lines across a variety of genres and reinvents his music time and time again."

"SWEET GUM TREE HAS A GRANDIOSE SWEEP AND THE ABILITY TO EMBRACE THE EMBELLISHMENTS WITHOUT ANY SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS... "GUILT TRIP" HAS A KINETIC SYNTH ENERGY, SO DENSE AND LAYERED THAT IT HAS AN UNSTOPPABLE MOMENTUM. WITH "THE GIFT" THE FOCUS SHIFTS AND WE ARE MORE IN THE TERRITORY OF SOPHIA (THE BAND LED BY ROBIN PROPER-SHEPPARD) THOUGHTFUL MELODIC SLOWCORE... Attention, excellence !

"As the stylishly descending piano cadences of Redhead reveal that rare thing - a song about anti-ginger prejudice - your ears quickly prick up. There's also a beautifully windswept, wintry feel to "Astray," thanks to swells of Scott Walker-style strings... Isobel Campbell's gossamer soft cooing lights up the delicate, yearning acoustica of "Bird Of Passage"."

French crooner in "not rubbish album" shocker... The selling point is "Bird Of Passage", a dreamy, waltzing duet with Isobel Campbell, but just as interesting is "The Crimson Flush" (which recalls Costello's The Juliet Letters), and the Johnny Marr-ish "Grateful As Fire". Most intriguing is "Redhead", a lush ballad about Ginger persecution through the centuries."

"French singer-songwriter Arno Sojo came to debut his new project of beautifully orchestrated ballads and from the opening chord to the encore’s final note he presented a tour de force of deliciously dreamy pop perfection. Switching between guitars and piano, the soft-voiced vocalist was backed by a fluid band including The Church’s Marty Willson-Piper and a dynamic string section that lifted the already well-crafted songs to a euphoric level. Among the many highlights of woozy psychedelia and lush soundscapes, all sung in English, were the piano and strings-led 'The Vulnerable Almighty' and the gorgeous Gallic Prefab Sproutness of 'Astray'. Pure class."

(London Union Chapel review) "The sound was almost perfect with Sojo's sensitive vocals beautifully complemented. He's also no slouch on the guitar as he deftly demonstrated several times. 'The Vulnerable Almighty' saw Sojo take to the piano and tonight it was a real tour de force. ' November Daughter' ’s delicate insistence took on a darker hue while the main set closer, 'Breathtaker', with its wide, cinematic textures was sublime."

“As poetic musically as it is lyrically, 'The Snakes You Charm & The Wolves You Tame' is an enchanting and sublimely enveloping taking of the imagination and emotions. Lush and magnetic the debut album from Sweet Gum Tree is a warm absorbing flight of vibrant and evocative ballads casting crystalline reflections. It is also a presence which evolves and seduces to greater extents with every listen, the songs expanding their embrace and thought summoning potency across numerous encounters to leave the listener lost and immersed in a spellbinding creative soak... Every song on 'The Snakes You Charm & The Wolves You Tame' is an emotional colour driven sail through melodic and vivid life bred hues, and the strongest evidence that Sweet Gum Tree is set to inflame a swarm of hearts.”

"A captivating, layered showcase of the French songwriter's craft... something of a revelation – here we have a wordsmith whose poetry could easily stand alone... A lush orchestral backing lifts each song on this record to dizzying heights, along with Sojo's crisp and ornate acoustic fingerpicking. THE SNAKES YOU CHARM & THE WOLVES YOU TAME is a high-quality collection of thoughtful ballads set against an incandescent backdrop of swirling string arrangements and delight."

"Strength through gentleness, iron wrapped in velvet... Volumes of joy.... Gorgeously orchestrated pop songs... 'Bird of Passage', the duet with Campbell is full of light and floats on the air - sensual and seductive and with a surprise knife twist... Sumptuous stuff for certain - and avoids the pitfalls of cloying sweetness whilst being never less than wordy, dreamy, feather soft, soufflé light and surprisingly satisfying."

"Don’t be fooled by its winter-esque charms for here mellowed and murmured are the teasing cascades of radiant baroque folk pop flowering amid the pastoral inclines as it trembles and softly swoons to the peaking arcs of weaving strings arrangements and the prettified bouquet of whispered secret love notes. Entrancing stuff."

“When it’s good, it’s really, really good, as in the beautiful duet 'Bird of Passage' with Isobel Campbell, which boasts an impossibly great mix of vocal styles and some cinematic strings. It’s achingly romantic and successfully fuses elements of folk-pop with the singer’s classical-jazz interests... Similarly, 'Last Chance Train' comes alive during its pained – yet restrained – chorus, when the folk strumming gives rise to layered string arrangements and an almost falsetto chorus that aches with emotion. Sojo’s penchant for strings is also evident on the deeply cinematic 'Astray', which also combines vocal traces of David Bowie with David Byrne and sung-spoken... 'Chew Up Spit Out' is a beauty, combining some folk-pop elements with lush piano arrangements (sparingly used) and provocative lyricism (it could be called Beck-like), while 'The Vulnerable Almighty' builds from a sparse opening to something achingly poignant...”

"Somewhere in the making of pop music, the inclusion of strings fell out of favor, an unfortunate turn of events for lovers of the lush, romantic melodies that were frequently found on the charts. French singer-songwriter Arno Sojo is doing his best to undo this shortcoming with his chamber project Sweet Gum Tree. 'Bird Of Passage' is a breathtakingly beautiful ballad, featuring a duet with Isobel Campbell, formerly of Belle & Sebastian. It’s classic French-style chanson: an enchanting, melancholic number... with its sublime, symphonic qualities."

press release - JANUARY 2017
Sweet Gum Tree’s first and heavily supported album by the likes of Mojo, Uncut and The Line Of Best Fit, came to fruition with the help of many prestigious collaborators such as Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian), Earl Harvin (Tindersticks) and Marty Willson-Piper (The Church). This time, Arno Sojo has reshuffled his cards and chosen to record this new album almost entirely on his own, with help from Irish producer David Odlum (long-time partner-in-crime of Gemma Hayes and Glen Hansard).
Both a beautiful, romantic adventure and an unnerving trip through a mind crowded with troubled creatures, Sojo’s earnest vocals confirm that he is amongst those who still believe that music and words can touch the soul, by way of sincerity, constant reinvention and fine craftsmanship. Minimal drum machines and echo-laden guitars throughout create a state of grace evoking the ethereal new-wave productions of British label 4AD as well as hymns from great pop architects like Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout or Divine Comedy. The album’s electronic rigidity contrasts perfectly with the elegant strings and soaring melodies, while Sojo’s gravelled vocals ensure it remains an outstandingly humane and sensitive collection of tracks.
The album’s title nods to Wes Anderson’s acclaimed, ‘‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’’, which itself was based upon Stefan Zweig’s writings on the rise of Nazism in the mid-30’s. Drawing a parallel with the current fiery state of the world and Anderson’s tale of creating love despite all circumstances, Sojo reflects on the challenge of how one can fulfil the need to dream whilst in such a desperate context.
The soul in Sojo’s voice is what really drives ‘Sustain The Illusion’, particularly on tracks such as ‘Someday’, ‘Guilt Trip’ and the closing lullaby, ‘Keeper’, that lulls you into a complete sense of security. On the other hand, ‘Burn Your Icons’ is both a thought provoking, sharp and ironic look at the relevant question of how we view our fallen idols that gives a truly unique perspective on our society’s traditions.

Sustain the illusion ?
